In the previous blog, we learned about direct and indirect speech. In this blog, we are going to learn about Active and Passive voice. 


Types of Voice 

1) Active Voice 

2) Passive Voice 


Now let's learn about each type of voice in detail. 


1) Active Voice 

a) What is Active Voice? 

An active voice is a set of verbs, wherein a subject is a person or a thing, supposed to be performing an action that can take a direct object. 


Example: 

a) The girl ate the choco lava cake


In this sentence, the subject is the girl. While the verb is ate and the choco lava cake is the direct object

In this case, the girl is performing the action in terms of the cake eaten


b) The man was cutting down the trees




In this sentence, the subject is the man. The verb is was cutting and the object is trees

The man is performing the action in terms of cutting the trees


c) The boy wrote his answer on a piece of paper. 



In this case, the word -
the boy is the subject. The verb is - wrote. And the object is a piece of paper

The boy is performing the action in terms of writing on a piece of paper.  


2) Passive Voice 

a) What is Passive Voice? 

A set of verbs in which the subject is undergoing the actions that are being performed by the verb. 


Example: 

a) The mug was painted by him. 



In this sentence, the word him is the subject. The mug is the object. And was painted is the verb or the action being performed. 

The subject is undergoing the action performed by the verb.  


b) The police were given a clue. 

 


In this sentence, the word - the police is the subject. The verb is were given. And the object is a clue

The subject is undergoing the action performed by the verb. 


Now let's look at how to identify passive voice. 


How to identify if a sentence is in a passive voice. 

To identify if a sentence is in passive voice there is a clue for it : 

If there is the word "by" used in the sentence it means that it is in passive voice.
