Conjunctions
Conjunctions are words used to link words, phrases, or clauses. Conjunctions make a link between/among words or groups of words to other parts of the sentence and show a relationship between or among them.
Now let's have a look at a few examples of conjunctions used in sentences and understand the concept better.
Example:
1) We buy fruits and vegetables at the grocery store.
In this sentence, the word and is used to join to words. In this case, the words are fruits and vegetables. They are being linked together in a sentence.
2) We brought two pairs of socks, jeans, a crop top and a bracelet for you from the mall.
In this sentence, the word and is used to link the bracelet to the list of other things we brought from the market.
3) They ordered pizza, fries, and a cold drink for the party.
In this sentence, the word and is used to link cold drink in the list of the things they ordered for the party.
4) Priya and Mohan visited Mr. and Mrs.Menon's house to wish them on the occasion of their 21st wedding anniversary.
In this sentence, the word and is used to join two names. In this case, the conjunction and is used twice in the sentence (marked in bold).
Or is the conjunction that is used to give a choice to a person in a certain situation.
5) Would you like to have tea or coffee?
In this sentence, the word or is used to give the person options or a choice, that is, which beverage the person would like to have.
6) Will you go with mom to the market or stay at home?
In this sentence, the word or is used to give a choice to either stay at home or go to the market with mom.
7) Are you going to work today or take a break?
In this sentence, the word or is used to again give an option or a choice. In this case, the word or is giving a choice to either take a break or work.
But is also a conjunction. It is used to give reasons to a situation.
8) He tried but did not win.
In this sentence, the word but is giving a reason.
9) She did her work on time but was unnecessarily scolded by her boss.
In this sentence, the word, but is giving a reason for her being scolded.
