Nouns

We know that nouns are an important element in language. But do we know the types of nouns and their use? So today, let's briefly learn about nouns.

What is a Noun?

A noun is a word that names a person, place, animal, idea, or thing. A noun can be used as a subject, object, or as an adjective in a sentence.

There are mainly ten types of nouns. They are:-

1) Proper Noun

A proper noun is the particular name of the person, place, animal, or thing.

Example: Thomas is an intelligent boy.
In this sentence, Thomas is the proper noun as it is the particular name of a person.

Example: Taj Mahal, Queen Victoria, Red Fort, Goa
              
          


2) Common Noun

A common noun is a noun that denotes a general or common person, place, or thing.

Example: The girls are going to school.
In this sentence, Girls is the common noun as it is not telling us about any specific girl.
    
Example: Boy, Doctor, Engineer, Scientist

      



3) Collective Noun

A collective noun is a number of things taken together and spoken as a whole.

Example: The bunch of keys is kept on the table.
In this sentence, the bunch is the collective noun as it is showing many things together, as a whole.

Example: Swarm/Rabble of bees, Shoal/School of fish

      

    
4) Abstract Noun

An abstract noun is used to denote some quality, state, or action. They cannot be touched. They are basically used to describe feelings. 

Example: She regained her liberty.
In this sentence, liberty is the abstract noun as we cannot touch it and it is a feeling.

Example: Anger, Freedom, Love, Hatred




5) Material Noun

The things that are made up of materials are called the 'material things' and the name given to these materials are called material nouns.

Example: Protein is important for energy.
In this sentence, protein is the material noun as it is a material.

Example: Gold, Coal, Water, Silver, Rock, Rain, Earth




6) Countable Noun

The name of anything such as a person, place, animal, or thing that we can count is called a countable noun.

Example: There is a dog outside my house.
In this sentence, a dog is a countable noun as we can count it.

Example: A house, A few books, A pencil





7) Uncountable Noun

The name of anything such as a person, place, animal, or thing that we cannot count is called an uncountable noun.

Example: The container full of milk was kept on the table.
In this sentence, the word milk is an uncountable noun as it cannot be counted.

Examples: Water, Air, Money, Food



8) Possessive Noun

A possessive noun shows ownership.

Example: The boy's book is kept on the table.
In this sentence, boy's is the possessive noun as it shows that the book belongs to the boy. It shows possession towards it.

Examples: Hers, Girl's, Lady's
