In this blog, we are going to continue the topic of prepositions. So now let's learn and understand other prepositions and their uses.
The prepositions we are going to learn about in this blog are -
On, For, In, Of, In addition to, On behalf of.
So let's start our journey of understanding prepositions completely.
1) On
This preposition is used to show the position of an object that is above something else.
This picture is of books kept on the table.
Example:
a) The books are kept on the table.
In this sentence, the word on is used to show the position of the book, that is above the table.
b) The bouquet of flowers is kept on the chair.
In this sentence, the word on is again used to show the position of the bouquet of flowers. It is kept (on) above the chair.
2) For
This preposition is used to show or indicate some action being performed for a person or thing.
This picture is about a boy and a girl dancing.
Example:
a) The boy and girl are dancing for refreshment.
In this sentence, the word for is used to show the action being performed by the boy and the girl. It is also used to show the purpose for doing this, that is for refreshment.
b) The people of the village are praying to god for everyone's health.
In this sentence, the word for is used to show the action being performed by the villagers and the purpose of praying as well, that is for everyone's health.
3) In
This preposition is used to show something inside another thing.
This picture is of the candies and sweets inside the box.
Example:
a) The sweets and candies are kept in the box.
In this sentence, the word in used to show the place where the candies are kept. They are inside the box.
b) The jewels are in the locker.
In this sentence, the word in is used to show the place where the jewels are kept. They are inside something, that is the locker.
4) Of
This preposition is used to show that an object or another thing belongs to a person. It shows possession towards some object.
This picture is of a boy eating a chocolate bar.
Example:
a) The chocolate bar is of Dairy Milk.
In this sentence, the word of is used to show that the chocolate belongs to the Dairy Milk brand.
b) The temple is made of the money provided by the trust and the citizens of the city.
In this sentence, the word of is used to show that the temple is made from the money provided by the people. It shows that people have donated money for making the temple.
5) In addition to
This preposition is used to mention or specify anything extra or additional. Let's have a look at one example-
This picture is of a box of chocolates with flowers beside it.
Example:
a) I received a box of delicious chocolates from the company. In addition to this, the company also sent me a bouquet of flowers.
In this sentence, the word in addition to is used to show that the flowers were not included. They were sent additionally along with the chocolates.
b) Not only was the Singapore trip sponsored. In addition to this, the expenses were also taken care of.
In this sentence, the word in addition to is used to show that the expenses were taken care of additionally.
6) On behalf of
This preposition is used to show that someone is performing an action in the absence of the person who is meant to do that.
This picture shows a man writing a letter.
Example:
a) The manager wrote the letter on behalf of the company.
In this sentence, the word on behalf of is used to show that the manager is writing the letter for the company. He is writing the letter on behalf of the company.
b) I went to the wedding ceremony on behalf of my parents as they had to urgently go out for work.
In this sentence, the word on behalf of is used to show that I went to the ceremony because my parents had to go to work urgently. I performed the action on their behalf.
