 Prepositions



What are prepositions? 

A preposition is a word or a group of words used before a noun or a pronoun to show direction, time, place, location, or to introduce or explain the position of an object. 


Examples Of Prepositions : 

About, Over, Across, After, Below, Under, Against, Along, Among, Around, Away, At, etc. 


Now let's have a look at the uses of prepositions and see their uses in the sentences. 


1) About

It is used to give information about something. It shows a connection between the person or the object and the thing that is said about it. 



This picture is about a thief. (Refer example a)

Example:

a)Have you heard about the thief who was encountered by the police yesterday morning? 

In this sentence, the word about is giving us information about what happened to thief. 

b) I have heard about the new fun fair being organized in the village. 

In this sentence, the word about is used to give information regarding the village fun fair.


2) Over 

This preposition is used to show something on the surface. It shows that something is above some object or person. 

This cat is over the table. This is because it is on the surface of the table. (It is above the table).

Example: 

a)The plane flew over my house. 

In this sentence, the word over is used to show that the plane is above the house. 

b) She put the piece of paper over the packaging box.

In this sentence, the word over is used to show that the piece of paper is on the surface of the table. 


3) Across 

This preposition is used to show something going from one side to the other side of something. 

The garbage is across the street.

Example: 

a) The water force is extremely high all across the river. 

In this sentence, the word across is used to tell us that the force of water is high from one side of the river to the other side. 

b) The garbage is scattered all across the street. 

In this sentence, the word across is used to show the position of garbage, (that is from one end of the street to another).


4) After 

This preposition is used to show something happening later than something else. It is used to show something behind another thing. 


This picture is of a boy running after a girl.

Example: 

a) Rohan ran after Soham to catch him. 

In this sentence, the word after is used to show that Rohan is at a position behind or later than Soham. 

b) I will call you after dinner. 

In this sentence, the word after is used to show that the call will be post-dinner time. 


5) Below 

This preposition is used to show something lower than the other thing. It is under the other thing. 


This picture is of books kept below the chair.

Example: 

a) Your capris length is below your knees. 

In this sentence, the word below is used to show that the capris length is lower than the knees. It reaches under the knees. 

b) The books are kept below the second section of the shelf. 

In this sentence, the word below is used to show that the books are under the table. 


6) Under 

This preposition is used to show something below something or at a level lower than something. 


This cat is under the table. This is because it is at a level lower than the table; it is under it. 

Example: 

a) The book is kept under the table. 

In this sentence, the word under is to show that the level on book is lower than the table. It is kept below the table. 

b) The senior manager has the junior manager and the designing team under his hand. 

In this sentence, the word under is used to show that the members of the designing team and the junior manager are at a position under the senior manager. 


7) Against 

This preposition is used to show how something takes the support or help of other. Basically, it is used to show the helping or opposite relations between objects. 

This picture is of a ladder leaning against the wall.

Example: 

a) The ladder leaned against the wall. 

In this sentence, the word against is used to show how the ladder takes the support of the wall. 

b) Our school is competing against all other schools participating in the interschool competition. 

In this sentence, the word against is used to show how our school is competing with other schools to win. Here, it shows the opposite relationship. 


8) Along 

This preposition is used to show that something goes with another thing. It moves or comes with another thing. It may refer to a person or an object. 

This picture is about chocolates hamper along with a greeting card and bouquet of flowers. (Refer example a)

Example: 

a) The chocolate hamper came along with the greeting cards and the bouquets of flowers. 

In this, sentence, the word along is used to show that the chocolate hamper came with the bouquet. It travelled along with the greeting card and bouquet of flowers. 

b) Paul went to the party along with his building friends. 

In this sentence, the word along shows that Paul went to party with his friends.


9) Among 

This preposition is used to point out one or more than one thing in a group or out of many. It is used to specify only about one person or object. 


This picture is of one pencil among many. (Refer example b).

Example: 

a) The criminal is one among the suspected people. 

In this sentence, the word among is used to point out only one person out of many people. 

b) Your pencil is one among these sets. 

In this sentence, the word among is used to specify only about one pencil in the bunch of pencils. 


10) Around 

This preposition shows something nearby. It is usually used to show people or things in close range to another object or thing. 


This picture is of a swarm of bees buzzing around the flowers. (Refer example a).

Example: 

a) The bees are buzzing around the flowers. 

In this sentence, the word around shows us that the bees are near the flowers. They are in a close range around it. 

b) The thief was seen somewhere around the pizza center. 

In this sentence, the word around shows us that the thief was seen nearby the pizza center. It was in close range to the pizza center.
