In the previous blog, we learned about Active and Passive Voice. In this blog, we are going to learn about Tenses. 


So, let's learn about tenses in detail. 


Types Of Tenses 

1) Present Tense 

2) Past Tense 

3) Future Tense 


There are four subtypes in each of the following types of tenses. Let's look at these types. 


Types of Tenses 

1) Present Tense 

a) Simple Present Tense 

b) Present Continuous Tense 

c) Present Perfect Tense 

d) Present Perfect Continuous Tense 


2) Past Tense 

a) Simple Past Tense 

b) Past Continuous Tense 

c) Past Perfect Tense 

d) Past Perfect Continuous Tense 


3) Future Tense 

a) Simple Past Tense 

b) Past Continuous Tense 

c) Past Perfect Tense 

d) Past Perfect Continuous Tense 


Now let's look at each type and subtypes of tenses in detail and practice them in a sentence to understand the concept better. 


1) Simple Present Tense

a) What is Present Tense? 

The present tense is used to express the action that is taking place or habitually performed or a state where something generally exists. 


Example: 

a) John eats ice cream. 

In this sentence, the word eats shows that the action is taking place in the present or it generally happens. 


b) The girl dances every day. 

In this sentence, the word dances show that the action takes place often (every day). 


2) Present Continuous Tense 

a) What is Present Continuous Tense? 

Present Continuous Tense is the tense that tells us when something is happening now itself. 


Example: 

a) James is eating the pastry. 

In this sentence, the word eating is showing that the action is happening now itself, right now! 


b) Ankit is rushing for school. 

In this sentence, the word rushing shows that the action is taking place right now. 


3) Present Perfect Tense 

a) What is Present Perfect Tense? 

The Present Perfect Tense is used to show that something that happened in the past has consequences in the present. 


Example: 

a) He has written a letter to his sister. 

In this sentence, the word has shown that something has happened in the past, and written is a perfect tense, hence it is showing an effect in the present tense. 


b) My mom has cooked dinner. 

In this sentence, the word has shown that something has happened in the past, and the word cooked is a perfect tense, hence creating an effect of the present perfect tense. 


4) Present Perfect Continuous Tense 

a) What is Present Perfect Continuous Tense? 

Present perfect continuous tense is the same as Present perfect tense, except for that, that the consequences are in a continuous tense, which is happening right now. 


Example: 

a) She has been teaching dance for 5 years. 

In this sentence, the word has been teaching is showing that the action that was started five years ago is still continued and is having an impact. The action is still happening. 


b) He has been working in the company for 15 years. 

In this sentence, the word that has been working is showing that the action that was started fifteenn years ago is still continued and is having an impact. The action is still happening.

 Phrases In our previous blog, we learned about sentence structure. In this blog we are going to learn about phrases, that is important element in a sentence. Now let's learn about phrases in detail.  What is a Phrase?  A phrase is a small group of words that stand together as a conceptual unit.
